Apple Chippies

I absolutely love apple chips, I mean who doesn’t love a good dehydrated apple slice?! I am sorry if your are the few who do not enjoy apple chips, but I do think you are crazy, nothing personal! Out of all the dried fruit, next to craisins, dried apples are my favorite snack to enjoy when I am craving something sugary sweet.

In general apples are my favorite fruit to snack on, they are a great combination of sweet and tart. My favorite apples tend to be gala, pink lady, or granny smith, if I am wanting something super tart. I most frequently grab a good crisp gala apple for that good combination of sweet and tart. If anyone has any apple suggestion leave a comment! I’d love to know what your favorite apples are! Maybe I’ll find my new favorite apple!!

Back to the dried fruit scene, it is hard to find dried fruit that aren’t loaded with sugar and that aren’t so expensive. So naturally, when my grandma gifted me a dehydrator last year, apple chips were the first snack I started to create. I got to cooking and I slowly started to perfect my apple chip recipe, and I believe I have finally conjured it up!

These apple chips are tangy, sweet, tart, and warm. I absolutely fell in love when I ate my first chip and they are everything I wanted in an apple chip. The worst part was that they didn’t last long enough! I hope you enjoy!

INGREDIENTS

4, thinly sliced, gala apples or apple of choice

The zest and juice of 2 cuties

2 tbs of lemon juice

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp ground nutmeg and ginger

1/8 tsp ground cardamom

DIRECTIONS

  1. Mix the ingredients from the zest and juice of the cuties to cardamom in a plastic gallon baggie.
  2. Add the sliced apples into the bag and shake and mix so that the juice and seasoning gets smothered on every apple slice.
  3. Lay the apple slices in a single layer on the dehydrator racks. Place in the dehydrator, set it at 165 degrees F and let it cook for 6-10 hours depending on the thickness of your apple slices.

TIPS

  1. When slicing the apples, place the apple vertically so the stem is sticking up. Slice a small piece of the apple off the side and place it down on the cutting board so the exposed part of the apple is resting on the cutting board. This helps the apple to stay stable so you can more accurately slice the apple. Try and make sure all the slices are similar so they cook evenly.
  2. I accidentally cut a few apples thick and kept those in for 8 hours to get them crunchy enough, but most of mine were nice and crunchy by 6 hours.

In my opinion, you can’t beat a honeycrisp apple when they’re in season/on sale. SO tasty.
