Mango Salsa

When I think of salsa I normally I think traditional tomato salsa. It hasn’t been until of late, that I have been expanding my horizons on what salsa can be! For Christmas we got a box from our aunt and uncle that contained cherry salsa, which is more of the consistency of traditional salsa. I know what you may be thinking, cherry salsa? If you ever have the opportunity to try cherry salsa you NEED to. It was sweet, tangy, with a touch of spice and add the saltiness of a tortilla chip, it hits all the taste buds guys, ALL OF THEM! Delicious guys, seriously delicious, we ate our whole 10oz jar in one sitting.

So, now onto the idea of mango salsa. When I made my mango salsa it is more like mango pico de gallo than salsa. Salsa literally translates to sauce and pico de gallo translates rooster beak (I did a little blog post on pico de gallo if you want to find out a little more on that, Heirloom Tomato Pico de Gallo). Although pico de gallo is also considered a sauce, overall I’m pretty confused as to why pico de gallo is not a “salsa”, I think it has to do with traditions, but if you have more information on this please let me know and clear the confusion!

This mango salsa, or pico de gallo, was really tasty and I was nervous about it, mainly because I am not a fan of mangoes; I’ve literally have tried them every way possible because I have wanted to like them, but I just don’t! I decided to try my hand at mango salsa anyway, and it turned out really good, I paired the mango salsa with chili rubbed tilapia (which will come later) and it was, to quote my husband, “a restaurant quality meal”.

1 mango

1 red bell pepper (for color and taste)

1/2 red onion

1 small jalapeno (or two if you want it more medium)

a pinch of salt

1/4 tsp cayenne

1/2 lime juiced

1/4 cup fresh cilantro or 1 tsp. dried

  1. Dice the the mango, bell pepper and red onion and add them to a small bowl.
  2. Mince the jalapeno and toss them into the same bowl.
  3. Grab a pinch of salt, like 1/4 tsp, add the cayenne pepper, juice of the lime and the chopped cilantro.
  4. Mix together and wallah mango salsa!
